Abstract

This narrative research explores the historical accounts of Averroes' life, his socio-cultural background, and his dynamic role in the history of Muslim thought. Coming from a highly reputable family, Averroes maintained his ancestors' legacy through exemplary morals and dedicated social service. The study highlights his efforts to reform the contemporary educational system by advocating for a structured, staged approach to learning. In theology, he preserved his intellectual individuality during an era marked by the decline of the Mu'tazilites and the dominance of Ash'arite doctrine. He critiqued both schools, proposing instead that common people be taught core doctrines through a simple, literal adherence to sacred texts. Furthermore, in jurisprudence, he favored an expansive textual approach and emphasized the vital need for Ijtihad. In his philosophical inquiries, Averroes challenged Muslim theologians, aimed to diminish Ash'arite theological influences, and defended ancient philosophers without compromising his Islamic faith. He also contributed significantly to political science by analyzing various governance systems, ultimately identifying the Rashidun Caliphate as the ideal model. This research demonstrates how Averroes sought to revitalize Muslim thought and championed freedom of expression an intellectual stance for which he faced persecution until his demise.
