Abstract

The rapid expansion of the cosmetics and beauty industry has resulted in the widespread use of animal-derived ingredients in cosmetics, personal care products, and ornaments. While many of these ingredients originate from lawful sources, others are obtained from animals or animal by-products that are prohibited (ḥarām) under Islamic law. This development has raised significant Sharīʿah concerns regarding the permissibility of using such products, particularly among Muslim consumers. This study aims to examine the Sharīʿah rulings governing in this regard by analyzing the nature, sources, and legal status of these substances in the light of Islamic jurisprudence. The research adopts a qualitative and analytical methodology based on the Qur’ān, Sunnah, classical Ḥanafī juristic literature, and contemporary scholarly discussions. It investigates the use of animal fat, skin, bones, hair, blood, excreta, ivory, and insect-derived substances in cosmetic products and ornaments, while distinguishing between blood-bearing and non-blood-bearing animals and examining the legal effects of slaughter, tanning, purity (ṭahārah), and impurity (najāsah). The findings reveal that Islamic law does not assign a uniform ruling to all animal-derived ingredients. The study emphasizes the necessity of ingredient transparency, Sharīʿah-compliant manufacturing practices, and increased consumer awareness to promote the development and use of authentic halal cosmetics and beauty products.
