Abstract

The Chishti Order emphasizes Mujāhada al-Nafs (struggle against the self) as a core spiritual discipline to purify the ego and overcome personal desires that distance one from God. This practice is integral to achieving spiritual perfection, enabling seekers to experience divine love and true submission to Allah. The Chishti approach balances internal spiritual struggle with outward acts of compassion, service, and humility. Essential practices include dhikr (remembrance of Allah), prayer, fasting, and seeking the company of the righteous. The ultimate goal is to attain fanā (annihilation of the self), where personal desires are completely surrendered to God.This inner struggle is not meant to isolate the seeker from the world but to transform the individual into a more compassionate and spiritually aware being. The Chishti masters taught that real victory over the self leads to the refinement of character, deeper humility, and sincere devotion. Through consistent practice and spiritual companionship, the seeker gradually detaches from worldly distractions and grows closer to divine presence. Thus, Mujāhada al-Nafs serves as both a personal discipline and a spiritual journey toward unity with the Divine. This paper presents an analytical review of the Chishti Order’s practices in Mujāhada al-Nafs, exploring both the spiritual methodology and its transformative impact on the seeker.
