Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to explore the use of poetic testimony in Tafsir Munīr by Dr. Wahbah al-Zuhayli. This study shows that Arabic poetry is used in classical Islamic literatures as a tool for interpreting the meanings of Qur'an. Contrary to the prevailing opinion that Islam discourages poetry, the Islamic tradition not only acknowledges but appreciates meaningful poetic expression, when used for understanding language and meaning. Our Holy Prophet (PBUH), his companions, and distinguished exegetes valued poetry. Many scholars have relied on Arabic poetry to explain the nuances of the Qur'anic language. Analytical and descriptive approach has been employed in this research work. Dr. al-Zuhayli, known for his refined literary taste, frequently employs poetry in his exegesis. His approach includes the usage of single verse under a specific Qur’anic verse, quoting several poems to explain one word, or referencing the same poem at various places to explain different verses. His methodology does not reflect only his scholarly depth but also contributes to the methodologies of interpretation of Holy Quran. The study concludes that Dr. al-Zuhayli’s literary engagement with poetry in Tafsir al-Munīr enhances the interpretive clarity and linguistic richness of the Qur’anic exegesis, making it a valuable contribution to the tradition of Qur'anic scholarship.
