Abstract

This study explores the subject of attire in Islamic jurisprudence, focusing on the Sharia rulings that govern it and its profound impact on the behavior, identity, and values of individuals and society. It begins by defining the concepts of libās (attire) and sulūk (behavior), and by tracing the significance of clothing, both physical and symbolic as mentioned in the Qur’an. The study also examines the descriptions and examples found in the Sunnah regarding the attire of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), thereby highlighting the prophetic model of modesty and decorum. Furthermore, the research elucidates the legal dimensions of covering one’s nakedness (awrah), outlining the various Sharia rulings related to permissible, recommended, and prohibited forms of clothing. Beyond jurisprudential discussions, the study investigates the broader ethical and social dimensions of attire, analyzing how Sharia-compliant dress influences moral behavior, personal identity, and the overall fabric of Muslim society. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, this research addresses the central question: What are the Sharia rulings concerning attire, and how does clothing affect individual and collective conduct within a legal, moral, and social framework? The study ultimately underscores that attire is not merely an external expression of style or culture, but a reflection of faith, modesty, and moral consciousness, one that shapes the spiritual and social harmony of the Muslim community.
